Graduate Student Recruitment Weekend 

This year we welcome prospective new students to Gainesville and UF February 14 & 15.  Stay tuned for our planned events, which include an afternoon picnic meet and greet for current students and faculty.  We are very much in need of hosts willing to board a visiting student over the weekend.  Please  contact Chris LeClere (cleclere@ufl.edu), and he’ll set you up.  Interested in volunteering at the picnic and other events?  Contact Karen Jones (knjones@ufl.edu)

 

Armadillo Roast

The 48th Annual Fairbanks Armadillo Roast is March 14.  In addition to horses tournament and the mystery meat and pie competitions,  some new attractions, among them a Hot Ones challenge (how many actual or faux chicken wings can you consume?), the chance to turn my office into a possum sanctuary, and, most importantly, an opportunity to decorate a faculty member’s office door in Flamingos.  As always, the roast is an important fundraiser and helps support graduate student dissertation research.  See the attached flyer for more details.

 

Archaeology in the News

Dr. Gabriel Prieto’s research is featured in the upcoming issue of Archaeology, “Remembering the Shark Hunters.”  The issue is not yet available on the website (archaeology.org), but I’ve attached the first page of the article here.

 

Upcoming Talks

Dr. Connie Mulligan is presenting a talk at the EGH Spring Seminar Series.  “Epigenetics, gene expression, and the intergenerational effects of traumatic stress in mothers and offspring in the Democratic Republic of Congo.”  The talk is Tuesday, February 11, at 11 am in EPI 150.  See the attached flyer for more info.

African American Studies at UF Turns 50! on Thursday, February 20, the Foreman Symposium will be held in Smathers Library 100, beginning at 8 am with an opening reception and continuing throughout the day, with academic, community, and alumni panels discussing the impact of African Studies at UF, and concluding with a film screening at 5 pm.  Friday is a day for celebrating the anniversary, with a reception and tour beginning at 10:30 am.  Anthropology is one of numerous department sponsors of this event.

Dept. of Geography, Anderson Lecture Series.  Dr. Darla Monroe, Chair of the Geography Department at Ohio State University and will be speaking onLand Systems and Climate Justice and Reciprocal relationships between forest management and regional landscape structures.  She is on campus for 2 days – February 20th and 21st and available to meet with interested faculty and students.  See the attached flyer for more details.
