Linguistic Documentation, Education and Revitalization in Brazilian Indigenous Languages (Dr. Franchetto)
About 160 indigenous Brazilian languages still survive in different levels of vitality, maintaining a great genetic and dialectical diversity. All these languages must be considered from vulnerable to critical endangered. The Brazilian constitution recognizes some linguistic rights, however the lack of linguistic policies and increasing schooling, among other factors, threaten the survival of these languages and the knowledge they convey. Despite the chronic lack of resources, a variety of initiatives have been developed to promote their preservation. This talk reviews recent documentation projects in Brazil, including indigenous education programs and revitalization initiatives of languages on the verge of extinction or considered extinct. It discusses these initiatives in the broader context of the struggles of indigenous peoples to preserve their ethnolinguistic heritage in the face of mounting pressures that threaten their cultural survival.
Excavations at Cotton Cay (Roberto)
Turks and Caicos is home to a wealth of pre-Columbian archaeological sites that preserve the lifeways of early Carribean peoples.  The 2014 excavations at Cotton Cay provided a rich experience for a burgeoning  young archaeologist, paving a path that led him to his graduate research today. Roberto will relate the results of his excavations, the perils and excitement of fieldwork, and how his experiences at Cotton Cay led him to where he is today.
