Research Interests
My master’s research surrounds Lake Pithlachocco (Newnans Lake) and its world-record cache of Archaic dugout canoes. Although at least 101 canoes have been documented through pedestrian surveys alone, systematic survey methods have not yet been applied. This project is a proof-of-concept documenting what submerged dugout canoes can look like under various remote sensing techniques, including side-scan sonar, ground-hardness, and water-coupled ground-penetrating radar. Ultimately, it seeks to support the rediscovery of additional canoes embedded within Lake Pithlachocco and across the innumerable other lakes within the Florida peninsula.
