Research Interests

Within Ethiopia, Christians and Muslims do not commonly consume each other’s meat or food that contains it. My research aims to address the extent in which taboo-based food boundaries may be crossed or transgressed in Ethiopia, calling for a re-analysis of the forms of reciprocity and commensality that may exist between Christians and Muslims in this region.

The navigation of these taboo-based food boundaries operates as a significant focus of my research, especially in the urban space of Addis Ababa where more recently established ‘foreign’ culinary spaces may concomitantly operate as new spaces of transgression, secrecy, and religious encounter.

Key Terms:

Anthropology of Food; Anthropology of Religion; Muslim-Christian Encounter; Taboo; Transgression; Boundaries; Secrecy; Disgust; African Studies; East Africa; Ethiopia
