FASA Colloquium

April 15, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

  • Dr. Clement Menard, “Horn of plenty: Cultural diversity in the Horn of Africa between the Last Glacial Maximum and the early Holocene”

Despite several decades of research, the chrono-cultural sequence of the Later Stone Age In the Horn of Africa remains poorly known. Because the region features great environmental diversity, and experienced dramatic climate change during Marine Isotope Stages 2-1, it is an ideal terrain for addressing human-environment interactions and thus understanding more comprehensively the diversity of human adaptations and technological innovations during a time period that is critical at a global scale. I will present the results of recent fieldwork and analysis conducted during my PhD (University of Toulouse, 2015) in three different areas (Main Ethiopian Rift, Ethiopian Southwest highlands and Somaliland). I will also present the ongoing analysis of Somalian archaeological collections conducted as part of a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida.
