Interpreting the Resilience and Transformation of Maya Landscapes from Above

Whittaker Schroder, Postdoctoral Associate with the Center for Latin American Studies and the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience at the University of Florida

The increasing accessibility of remote sensing data (including high resolution topography generated from airborne laser scanning, or LiDAR) has transformed and accelerated archaeological mapping, especially in the Mesoamerican Neotropics. These data offer opportunities to trace the land use, environmental change, and resilience of Maya landscapes across the Yucatán peninsula. However, remotely sensed big data also present practical, interpretative, and ethical challenges to understand the archaeological past and its enduring heritage. In this presentation, I compare 3 distinct LiDAR datasets along with their integration with ground-based and community-centered research in southeastern Mexico.
