“Imperialist Feminism: Diaspora and Heteronationalisms in the Cuban Iyanifa Debate”

A Lecture by Aisha Beliso-De Jesús

Thursday, January 28, 2016

10:00-11:30 A.M.

Criser Hall #201

A transnational debate over female initiations to ifá (Yoruba diaspora divination system) in Cuba arose between 2004 and 2007, pitting different practitioners within nationalist terms. This talk examines how competing ifá religious diasporas are held in tension through the iyanifa debate in Cuba.

Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús, PhD is the Associate Professor of African American Religions, Harvard Divinity School.
