Secularism and the Plight of Religious Minorities in the Middle East

Saba Mahmood is professor of anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley. Her work focuses on questions of secularism, religion, minority politics, and gender in the Middle East. She is the author of Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject (2005), and of Religious Difference in a Secular Age: A Minority Report (2015). She is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Henry R. Luce Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, and the American Council of Learned Societies.

The event is co-sponsored by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Religion, and the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research
