PRESENTS: Friend or Foe? The New Role of Corporations in Africa’s Development and Mining Sectors

The Social Change and Development in Africa working group’s overall aim is to facilitate discussions of critical and informed character on a broad range of issues related to social change and development in Africa. This includes a focus on both intended and prescribed development initiatives undertaken by governments, national, transnational actors and NGOs, and on the more subtle changes and developments that occur independent of specific intentions. Our bi-weekly meetings features presentations of work in progress by UF faculty members or students or by invited external speakers. We welcome faculty and students (both undergraduate and graduate) with diverse research interests related to development and social change in Africa and the African diaspora.

Dr. Diego Quiroga examines the different mechanisms that have been developed to conserve the fragile and unique ecosystems of the Galapagos, including the Galapagos Marine Reserve and the Terrestrial areas. In this talk he looks at the way in which these mechanisms have been successful. Special emphasis will be placed on the way in which the local population accepts or rejects these management mechanisms. Explore the conflicts between local people and mangers and analyze power relations between the different sectors.
Dr. Diego Quiroga is the current vice president of Research at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), Ecuador. In addition, he is also the Co-Director of the Galapagos Academic Institute for the Arts and Sciences (GAIAS) located on the island of San Cristobal, Galapagos.

How diaspora lives in language: young Syrian Jewish Mexicans in the 21st century
Dr. Evelyn Maria Dean-Olmsted is an assistant professor in the Dept of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Peidras. As a linguistic anthropologist, she studies language, power, and social identity in Latin America. She will present her ethnographic work on language and identity among Syrio-Lebanese Jews in Mexico City. She analyzes how speakers creatively and pragmatically draw on semiotic resources to forge relations in seemingly disparate social fields and challenge stereotype and stigma. In so doing, they defy assimilatory pressures to perpetuate distinctive, diasporic identities and lifeways into the 21st century, often in transformative ways.

“America’s and Europe’s New Jews”
Thursday, November 2, 2017, at 4:00pm in the Smathers Library Judaica Suite: Religious Studies professor Cynthia Baker (Bates College) will be giving a talk: “America’s and Europe’s New Jews.” The word Jew has evoked a wide range of images and meanings over time, and it continues to do so today. In recent years, the phrase “new Jews” has been used in public discourse as a kind of critical lens through which to interpret issues related to justice, equity, and the politics of identity. An exploration of how this phrase is invoked, and in what contexts, can reveal much about the persistent and changing connotations of Jew, as well as about diverse cultural dynamics in the United States and the European Union. Cynthia Baker is Chair of the Religious Studies Department at Bates College in Maine. She is the author of Jew, a new volume in Rutgers University Press’s Key Words in Jewish Studies series and the subject of the latest Marginalia Forum hosted by the Los Angeles Review of Books.

What: The Ethics Bowl is a debate. Life is messy and what is right is not always clear. The Ethics Bowl provides an opportunity for students to grapple with the real-world ethical dilemmas facing twenty-first century archaeologists, academics, and curators. Using ethical codes, as well as personal experience, legal precedents, and laws, teams craft solutions to case studies and defend these solutions in a debate. The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in biological anthropology, to begin in August 2018. This position is one of three in a “health related social science” cluster hire in the College of Arts and Sciences, which the college expects will invigorate a vibrant and collaborative community of health-related research and teaching. Applicants should be biological anthropologists who utilize a biocultural approach in research with living human populations. Geographical area of expertise is open. We are particularly interested in candidates who are conversant in cultural anthropology and who use a biocultural approach with interests among the following: nutrition and food / hunger issues; child growth and development; social or environmental justice; global health; and health inequalities. We seek candidates who can further collaborations in medical anthropology and the Health, Society, and Populations undergraduate major within the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as with the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, and with community partnerships.
We seek applicants with an active externally funded research program, a strong commitment to scholarship and teaching, and evidence of effective teaching. Scholarships:Off The Beaten Track 2018 This call is aimed at budding researchers with creative and open minds towards the challenges of applied research. We offer a unique learning opportunity in a multidisciplinary research project on the isle of Gozo, Malta. Expeditions and the University of Leuven offer a 20.000 euro scholarship fund to cover part or all of the tuition fee for the 2018 Malta Summer School.
