Hi All,
I hope everyone enjoyed a few days off for the holiday. Here are a few things of note:
Federal Grants and CAS Exemptions
If you currently have federal funding and need to expend funds that require a CAS Exemption, I’d encourage you to be proactive and process the CAS Exemption now, rather than waiting until you expect to make the expenditure. We recently had a case where one of our faculty members followed protocol and filed the CAS exemption, which then took 10 days for approval, and which then delayed the receipt of equipment required for field research.
For information on filing a CAS exemption, or for info on what kinds of expenditures require a CAS exemption, contact Karen Jones, and she can direct you to the appropriate locations.
CLAS Humanities Awards
Dr. Ken Sassaman was recently awarded a 2019 CLAS Humanities Scholarship Enhancement Award for his research project, “Ruins for the Future: Materializing Memories of the 1896 Hurricane at Atsena Otie, Florida.” Congratulations, Ken!
Holiday Party Reminders
Our Annual Holiday Party is December 5 this year, from 3-5pm, in the Keene Faculty Center. As a reminder, this is a pot luck affair, so bring your most festive and/or delicious dish to share. If you’re in a bind and don’t have time to prepare something, we’re happy to take donations to help with the costs of our catering.
As an additional draw, come and vote for you favorite research poster, as part of our Fall Research Exhibition! The stakes are high: first place prize is $750, second place $500, with funds to be directed toward their research.
Also, for faculty who have not yet done so, this is your chance to talk about your research program on camera — and in a gaudy holiday sweater, no less. We will be setting up to shoot profiles as part of the festivities.
2019 AAW Madelyn Lockhart Dissertation Fellowship Applications Now Open
The Association for Academic Women (AAW) at the University of Florida established the Madelyn Lockhart Fellowship to honor a PhD candidate who is both an outstanding researcher and who has contributed to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. One Fellowship in the amount of up to $2,000 will be awarded annually to assist in the dissertation phase of the doctoral degree. A full description of the Fellowship can be found here. Please note that applications should be submitted to Arlene Williams (arlenew@ufl.edu) by December 21
Cars and Coffee
Apparently, there is a thing out there on the internets of comedians who get in cars and drink coffee and have a grand time, hosted by Jerry Seinfeld. The tradition has now come to UF, as President Fuchs has recorded a “Gators in Cars Getting Coffee.” You can find the video here. It’s not as good as our Potlatch Skit, of course …
And that’s a wrap. Enjoy your weekend,
